FAQ
Water ejectquestions
Short, straight answers to what people ask most about clearing water from an iPhone speaker.
Does a water eject tone really work?
It can help with water held in the speaker grille. A loud low tone makes the speaker diaphragm move air in and out through the mesh, which pushes droplets out. It does nothing for water inside the phone, in the charging port or in the microphones.
Why can I not hear anything when I press Start?
Check that Silent Mode is off, the volume is turned up and audio is not going to AirPods, a Bluetooth speaker or CarPlay. Some browsers block sound until you tap the page, so press Start again if the first tap did nothing.
Is 165 Hz the right frequency?
165 Hz is the frequency most water eject tools use because it is low enough to move a lot of air and still loud on a small speaker. Nearby frequencies work too, which is why there is a Sweep mode and a Custom slider.
How many times should I run it?
Two or three runs of 30 seconds is usually enough. If the speaker still sounds muffled, try Sweep, then turn the phone so the earpiece faces down and run it again. If nothing changes after the phone has dried for a day, the issue is probably not water.
Can the tone damage my speaker?
It is a normal sound played at a volume the phone allows, and it stops on its own. Running it a few times is fine. Stop if the speaker crackles badly or the phone gets warm, and keep it away from your ear while it plays.
Does it work for the top earpiece?
Yes. iPhone 7 and later play media in stereo through both the bottom speaker and the earpiece, so the tone comes out of both. Run it once with the earpiece facing down.
Do I need to download an app?
No. The tone is generated in your browser when you press Start. Nothing is installed, no account is needed and the page works offline once it has loaded.
Does it work on Android phones and iPad?
Yes. The tool works in any modern browser with a speaker. The drying advice on this site is written for iPhone, so check your manufacturer's guidance for other devices.
Should I put my wet iPhone in rice?
No. Apple advises against it because small particles of rice can damage the phone. Leave it in a dry place with moving air instead.
How long until I can charge it?
Apple says to wait at least 30 minutes before retrying a cable after a liquid alert, and in its water-resistance article recommends at least 5 hours. Wireless charging is fine once the back of the phone is dry.
Is this site made by Apple?
No. Water Eject Help is an independent website with no connection to Apple Inc. iPhone is a trademark of Apple Inc. and is used here only to describe which devices the tool is for.
